IDE to USB 2 can't access

Mr. Whiskers

I hope someone can tell me how to resolve this, I have a IDE to USB 2
adapter for HDD or Zip or any other IDE drive. The problem is the computer
sees the drive but doesn't assign a drive letter. The drive ( have tried a
hdd and zip ) shows up in device manager as USB drive but isn't listed in My
Computer or Disk Management. I'm running XP pro sp2 and any help in
resolving this problem would be appreciateted.

Did you scroll to the bottom in disk manager? Did you delete it in device
manager?

Delete it in device manager, then unplug/replug the drive. Sometimes that
clears up problems.

You could also try "findpart tables": www.partitionsupport.com . It reads the
MBR.

However, this problem has been reported before, but I forget the outcome.

Yes and no respectively

Yes and no to what?

Oh, to that. OK.

Disconnect USB disk.

You can clear the registry's drive letter table before cloning the
partition, then let 2000/XP rebuild it the next time it boots. To clear the
table of partitions and drive letter assignments, use regedit to navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]. This key will contain a bunch of
values like "\??\Volume{...}" and "\DosDevices\C:", etc. Deleting all values
will induce Windows to regenerate all signatures and assign fresh drive
letters the next time it boots. Reboot system.

Reconnect USB disk.
