ide channel only sees one drive in BIOS

I have an Elite NForce motherboard with a SATA hard drive on its own
card, a Maxtor drive on IDE Channel 1 and a NEC DVD burner and a
Pl.extor CD-RW on IDE Channel 2. I am running WinXP SP 2.

The BIOS will only see one of the optical drives. Both work as long as
the other one isn't plugged in. If both are plugged in, it only sees
the Plextor, which is actually the slave drive. However, if I boot to
Windows with both drives plugged in, Windows crashes with a
MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION within seconds, if it boots at all.

A little history. I had a surge come through my UPS when the machine
was off. A diagnostic showed the motherboard and CPU was OK although I
did have to do a fresh install of Windows.
I then updated the BIOS but the situation didn't change. I tried
replacing the cable - no change.

The only think I haven't tried is swapping the IDE channels.

Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Many thanks,
Sierray

Hi,

Was it working ok before the surge? If so, then the motherboard is damaged
despite what any diagnostics are telling you (they aren't perfect by any
means). If not, then check that the master/slave jumpers are set correctly
for both and that you aren't using a cs cable.

Thanks. Yes they were working beautifully before the surge. I am
using an 80 pin calbe and the drives are properly configured. I will
go back to CyberPower with the motherboard issue.
