not sure if anyone can help but I have a very standard set up with one cable
running master and slave cd-roms, one cable running master and slave hard
disks, and one cable connected to a 3.5 floppy drive but since I connected
the master and slave drives which all work perfectly, the 3.5 is acting like
there is no disk in the drive no matter what i try to run. I'm sure I'm
overlooking something very simple but what it is I don't know any advice
would be helpful.

Either you've disconnected the power cable or you've disconnected the
data cable. Completely reseat both connections, the data cable at both
ends. Reboot.

Check to make sure the power cable is plugged in on the 3.5?
IDE plugged in the right slots on the BIOS?
jumper cables?

It's important to put the right connector on your floppy drive, since the
floppy drives have no jumpering. If it doesn't work, try the other cable
connector. Also, check in your BIOS to ensure that the floppy drive is
enabled.

By the way, the floppy drive doesn't usually Autostart its content so you
must navigate to its "folder" (My Computer > 3.5 floppy drive (A): ...

Why reboot when he'll need to boot after setting the cables. Of course I'm
assuming that he was smart enough to turn the computer off BEFORE
connecting these cables. Thankfully you aren't there helping him.
