I'd like to restore a lost function.

Somewhere along the line I've lost a function which I'd like to restore.

When I'd put a CD/DVD into the optical drive, or when I'd plug in my Zip
drive and insert a disk, I'd get a small window with four, I think it was,
options; such as, (paraphrased) "Always open this type of file with ..." or
"When this file ..., do nothing."

This no longer happens. I don't know why. Instead, when I insert a movie
on DVD, for example, nothing happens. I have to open Windows Explorer and
find a file to click to get the movie going.

You probably at some point accidentally set the open with
to "always open with this program" ... right click on the
file and select open with " and browse for the program
you want to use" ... always make sure to uncheck
the "always" box unless you are certain that is what you
want to use to open this file

Thanks, Nola, but I don't think this is going to get me back the function I
described.

Hi e,

Right click on the drive icon and select the 'Autoplay' tab. Make sure the
'Prompt me each time to choose an action' is checked. If it is already
checked, try selecting one of the other options and click 'Apply' then
reselect the former and try again.

Thanks very much, t@k. That's just what I was looking for. :)

For anyone else who's interested, I've added some further instructions to
yours as follows:

Right-click drive icon.
Left-click Properties.
Select Autoplay tab.
Make sure the 'Prompt me each time to choose an action' is checked.
If it is already checked, try selecting one of the other options and click
'Apply' then reselect the former and try again.
Or, if 'Restore Defaults' is active, click it.
