I'd like some help on swapping Sata Hard Drives, different brands.

Hi there,

I have a 80g SATA drive Seagate cloned(with ghost) with data,programs,
disk at work(XP). I have purchased a new pc and pick it up tomorrow. I
would like to just swap the Hard drive that is coming with the new
set-up(WD 120gb Sata).

I'm thinking just unplug the Hard Drive in my new PC, and put in the
clone. After i've got the system running I will format the new drive
and make it a slave. Therefore the clone becomes the boot disk. And the
new one sits on my desk until i've got everything settled.
Then run a re-install of XP, as their is different hardware.CPu,
motherboard, everything. I know this might not work & i should do a
complete re-install of XP. However, i would like to try it.

Has anyone ever tried something like this, any suggestions, ideas &
maybe some advice/gudance?

Can you just unplug one sata drive & attach another one. will the
system see it, and be able to use it? or should i use the disk setup
wizard diskette.

Regards

Yes, I usually go that route when upgrading to a completely new system.

You'll normally find that you cant just put the 80G drive into the new
system and boot off it, because the chipset particularly is different.

Just boot the XP CD and proceed as for a new install, and once
you have specified where it should go, the XP install will see the
old install and offer to repair it. That will proceed like a full new
install, but will retain all your non XP files and settings etc.

Normally not, see above.

No, use the XP CD to repair the install.

I suppose i just needed some re-assurance. I'll post back and let the

Well I spent all weekend but it went fine. Of course all my software
needed re activating. But it was a lot easier then loading all my work
back on from scratch. Cool.
