ICS

Has anyone heard of ICS? I want to use it to allow two
computers in my home to use the same dialup account, but
I can not get it to work. Does anyone know where
directions for how to use it are / or if it does work for
this purpose?

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: ICS , and hit enter.
Click on the article titled: "Internet Connection Sharing Overview".

That works! Great! Now I can't get the client computer
to stop dialing a connection for the internet when it's
turned on. Even logging off does not fix it. I went
into IE properties - connections and there was no
problems there. Any ideas?

Have a look around for programs that are aiming to get updates from the
net - AV; things like Real Player. One of them is probably doing it. I
don't know my way around ICS, but I think you should have the IE
connection on 'never dial a connection' on the client

Gentlemen -- This ICS issue does not depend on the third-party tasks running as XP will request the dial-up as soon as it reaches the user login screen. I share Brian's frustration, as my choice to use the "built-in" ICS means my 3-user network is almost always online

I have an added burden: I WANT the gateway to autodial, but !ONLY! to dial when an Internet process is launched by my users; user programs needing the dial-up include MS-Outlook, MS-IE browser, etc. Instead XP dials all the time -- regardless of how many start-ups are disabled -- it seems to be built into the XP OS!!

It's driving me crazy and tying up my dial-up line unnecessarily

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note that
AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names (FQDN), and
NetBIOS names.
