ICS with Win 2000 host PC and Win 98 SE client

Mark

I'm trying to log onto the internet from a Win 98 SE PC on
my home LAN, through a shared internet connection on my
Win 2000 PC. ICS setup wizard ran OK on Win 2000 host PC,
and host can dial into internet just fine.

Ran Internet Connection Wizard on Win 98 SE client PC. It
can log onto Win 2000 PC and use local LAN resources OK,
but cannot get to Internet. When I try to connect, there
is a momentary burst of LAN activity, then occassional LAN
activity, followed by a can't find web site error after
about 30 seconds.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

Mark

try to setup the ICS client without the wizard.
just setup the client to be a DHCP client, it should get all its
settings from the w2k station.
in internet explorer on the client go to tools>>internet optionsuse w2k as the proxy.

Hi Robert --

Thanks for the quick response. Bad news is that it still
doesn't work.

I turned on DHCP on the Win 98 client, and the symptoms
are as before.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

The W98 has got a bunch of adapters. Can you disable the ones you don't
really need?
The only important one is the Linksys Compact USB.

Hi Marina --

I was able to delete one adapter (leaves me with the Dial
up adapter and my Linksys USB network adapter.) This
reduced the IPCONFIG data to the data at the bottom of
this post. The client still can't see the internet.

One thing that's really puzzling is that if my dial up
connection on the Win 2K machine is down, and I bring up
IE on my Win 98 client, the demand dial process dials the
modem. (This tells me the Win 2K machine sees at least
some of the traffic from the Win 98 client.) Danged if I
can figure out why the client can't see the internet.

Thanks a million for your help with this. I'm stumped.

Hi Mark,

To be honest, I've never worked with an USB-adapter. Do you have the
possibility to use an ethernetadapter.

My Win 98 client is a notebook PC without an integral LAN
adapter, which is why I use a USB LAN adapter. The only
other alternative is a PC card adapter, which could create
a whole new set of problems. Maybe this isn't such a good
idea, after all.

I really appreciate your trying to help me with this.
I'll try to figure out a different way to get this machine
talking to the Internet.

Thanks again,
Mark
