The refresh of the desktop is probably the operating system recovering
and/or house cleaning after the program error. Is it always the same
programs getting stuck? Or does it vary? Have you checked in Event Viewer
for error messages? To open Event Viewer, click Start> Run and type in
eventvwr.msc

When the viewer appears, it will have two columns. Click on Applications on
the left and the right column will fill in with a list of items. Look for
items that have a red or yellow mark and that have a date/time stamp that
coincides with the program lockup. You can double click any item to bring
up another screen that contains more details.

You can repeat those steps in the System branch to see if there are any
system errors coinciding with the lockups too.
