Icons on Desktop?

I'm a bit confused as to how to control the icons on the desktop. The icons
on the lower left hand side beside the (<) symbol keeps on increasing when I
have a new program downloaded. It's the same with desktop icons showing on
screen and at the same time this is added to the start button. It goes to
those areas by itself. I'm afraid if I download more program then the
desktop would be full specially the lower right hand side which I found
redundant because it's already on the desktop itself. Where can I configure
this to get some control over these icons?

Thanks.

Go to Start|Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Click the
'Startup' tab. This shows everything that is starting up at boot and the
startup location. You can uncheck these items but it is better to go to the
startup location and eliminate them from there. Also occasionally by
right-clicking the icons it will give you a Preferences option that you can
go into an uncheck automatic start but if you aren't given that option then
go into msconfig. You won't be eliminating the programs just the automatic
startups.

I don't know which part is referred to as Quick launch or desktop toolbar
hence I just specified the location of the icons.
If I'm to gues the Quick launch is the one where Start button is and the
tool bar is the one on the lower left hand corner. I that right? Wherever
they are I still have to find how to control those icons.
Thanks.

QL is usually (but doesn't have to be) next to Start - it is turned off by default in XP. Toolbars can be anywhere (QL is a toolbar). Notification Area is where the time is. Where open programs are shown is called the taskbar (and the whole lot collectively is also called the taskbar - can't have people not being confused). The big area above the taskbar is called the desktop..

You are not being clear here. There is the Desktop, Quick Launch, Desktop
Toolbar and the Notification Area. Which exactly are you speaking of?
