icons not shown in full color

Hi!
I uninstalled some software ( i dont remember which) and from then on all
the icons in windows are shown in 256 colors.
I did go to the 'Display properites' and check the 'Show icons using all
possible colors' but that did not help.
Please help my desktop looks ugly.

It was 16 colors and not 256.
But I found the fix.

Check out the following key...
If it's not there, create the key.

Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
Value Name: Shell Icon BPP
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Data: 32

If Data is set to 16, 16 colors will be used
