Icons in true color

Hello. I had very nice "true color" icons in my desktop
and my launch bar. For some reason I started Windows 2000
in safe mode. After that, all my icons are like 16
colors, not the colorful and nice icons I had before.

How can I restore my icons?

Thanks.

Try right-clicking the wallpaper background, choose Properties, and
then go to the Effects tab. Mark the "Show icons using all possible
colors" option. You should also go to the Settings tab and make sure
that a "High Color" or "True Color" option is selected in the Colors
box.

Also, if Netmeeting's 'remote desktop sharing' has been turned
on, it will cause desktop icons to display in 16 or 256 colors.
Other remote control programs (e.g. PC Anywhere) can cause
the same thing.

Thank you very much.

There must be something else, because my color settings
are 32 bit true color, and I checked to use all available
colors in icons. I don't have any remote control software
installed...

Is there something in the Registry that might have been
changed?

Yes you do. Netmeeting is installed by default when you install
Win2K. Double check the remote desktop sharing option in
Netmeeting.

The direct registry key for icon color depth is here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\
WindowMetrics\Shell Icon BPP. Set it to 24 for true color,
16 for high color, or 8 for 256-color mode. After this,
reboot and double check the "Display icons using all possible
colors" option in Display Properties. Also check Appearance
and make sure you're not running a 256-color (VGA) scheme.
