Icons inop

BP Murphy

My computer locked up and I couldn't even exit the
programs I was running by using ctrl-alt-del. The window
would open but it wouldn't function. I had to hold the
power button in to shut it off. I rebooted ok but I can't
run any programs - when I try to click on a desktop icon
it doesn't do anything. Even the start menu won't open.
Since it is inop I can't use the restore option.

Not really sure of the extent of your damage here, but....

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

If needed use the Windows key + R to get to the run key for regedit and
Ctrl/Alt/Delete/File/New Task....

I would not be able to run regedit - can't click on
anything but I think I discovered the problem after all.
It appears that the mouse click is malfunctioning. Looks
like a hardware problem now. Too bad I discovered this
after many hours of other things such as repairing my XP
installation. Thanks for your input.

Ah, you didn't mention that is was the mouse (but then I guess you didn't
know), as many XP users face this same issue with desktop icons. Good luck
with it all, Brady.

The light came on (in my head) during the XP repair when
I was unable to click on the "next" icon. Out of
frustration I slammed the mouse down and suddenly I
started to get some intermittent response from it. I then
started to wiggle the wire and it seemed to make a
difference - guess it's time for that new cordless mouse
now.

That and, new batteries and depending on your system holding down the
connect button for three seconds.
