Icons disappear.

When downloading items from the internet,
associated icons are downloaded too as
desktop shortcuts.

However these vanish after a while, probably
when I clear cookies and internet files using
the IE properties utilities, and all that is
left is the boring old IE logo.

What is the proper way to keep these icons
permanently?

These special icons are called 'favicons" and they disappear because
they are kept in the Temporary Internet Files folder. See this link for
a way to keep them:
