Icons change to "generic"

Periodically, the desktop icon for Adobe Acrobat changes from the customary
pdf icon to some generic Windows icon. If I go open Windows
Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|File Types, and find Adobe Acrobat, the icon
there is the "generic Windows icon."

If I try to "Change Icon," I get an alert that "path. . . . Acrobat.exe
contains no icons." (When the icon is appearing properly, that IS
apparently where it resides.)

If I reboot, the proper icon re-appears. This only seems to affect the
Acrobat icon.

Any ideas what's triggerig this?

Thanks.

Ken:

I've got the same problem in Windows 2000 -- but it happened with
almost all the icons on my desktop. All the icons in the quick launch
tray are all white. I tried changing the icons, and in the change
icons dialog box it redisplays correctly, but then "Apply" doesn't
change the desktop icon.

I sorted Google by date, and yours is the most recent. Hoped that
this was a problem with a known solution. Apparently it isn't.
(Changing "Show Desktop.scf" is not the solution here).

Typically the MVP's will say that "Microsoft is aware of this performance
issue" (they never say bug or product defect).
Now if this is true..no one knows and I have seen no link to anything that
indicates what MS is "aware of " or isn't.

I have been in these ng's for more than 10 years. I hail from the Commodore
64, 300 baud modems, BBS's and MCI 5-digit LD codes!
There are a handful of seemingly earnest MVP's that try to help, have
websites to augment that help, and will work with any cooperative soul to
get a resolution to their related "Microsoft performance issue".

However for the most part IMHO they are arrogant, uninformed, unhelpful, men
and women whose goal in becoming an MVP is to join the "mutual ego stroking
society" that I feel the whole MVP online prescience is today.

In the meantime, I came across this KB article: Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 132668, entitled "Icons Randomly Change to Different Icons," which
calls for an edit of the registry.

I haven't tried yet, mostly because it calls for adding a "new string
value," and I'm not sure how to do that. (I've added "keys" before, though.

Oh well.

Is that what you call a "humble" opinion?

I have the same problem. Used to be able to logoff and re-login to restore them, but it no longer works. Also tried TweakUI and it does absolutely nothing. There are many posts on the issue but no solutions. It looks like MS is burying its head in the sand on the many little annoyances.
