icons appear below the desktop

I'm using XP, and every so often, I must press some key, but the icons on my
desktop actually appear BELOW the desktop, sticking out at the edges almost
as if the desktop is a large image someone smacked on top of my folders.
Has anyone seen this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Has nothing to do with a key.....

Generally speaking, ending explorer.exe and restarting or rebooting solves
this issue.
