Is there a supply of extra icons located in a file somewhere. If not, how do
I create one. The standard icons are kind of bland for my taste.

There are *many* icons available on the internet. Do a google search
on icon and you'll find lots.

A lot of them are in the shell32.dll file.

There are thousands available on the World Wide Web and sources can be
found with search engines.

One such source is here: http://www.iconarchive.com/

As Ken said, there are lots of sources for great icons on the Internet.
However, you do want to be cautious about your source since a lot of the
"free" icon/wallpaper/screensaver sites will give you malware (freeze.com,
I'm talking to *you*). Here are a few good sites for icons:

http://iconfactory.com/home/
http://weloveicons.com/
http://www.pixelgirlpresents.com/icons.php
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/index.php?sort=date

Thanks for the info.

What about IrfanView?

What about it? IrfanView is an image viewer (and a very good free one, too),
not a source for icons.

Absolutely!
How about creating your own. I've used IrfanView to turn ordinary jpegs and
the like into customized icons.

Oh, I see. You were making a suggestion, not asking a further question.

There are icons built into many executable programs and DLL's (Dynamic Link
Libraries.) For instance, right-click on a folder, click Properties, click
Customize tab, and click Change Icon, and you will get a window displaying
various icons found in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

There are some ancient icons in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\moricons.dll

Other people have mentioned web sources, etc.

You can find the talked of 'Libraries' (.dll files) of icons on your
system.

These include :

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
(The 'standard' library - used whenever a shortcut needs an icon when
one is not available in the program itself)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mshtml.dll
(Used for many internet related icons such as the default ones for URL
files)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\moricons.dll
(Used by M$-DOS applications - this file has been in use since Win3.1
virtually unchanged)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pifmgr.dll
(Also used for / by ancient M$-DOS type applications - only a set of
more generalized icons)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\quartz.dll
(Contains icons for some Media files)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmploc.dll
(Media Player .dll containing vast amount of icons related to media
files)
