Icon Deletion

I have a lot of icons in the toolbar nest to the clock in
the lower right corner of my screen.

How can I delete these icons?

The area you are referring to is called the system tray and contains icons
representing programs that are running in the 'background'.

The long and short of it is, you can't usually delete these icons without
uninstalling the programs that they refer to and unless you're sure that an
icon is representing a program or utility that your computer doesn't need,
you shouldn't uninstall them.

A much easier way of cleaning up the system tray is to use the 'hide
inactive icons' option form the task bar.

Right click on an empty part of the task bar at the bottom of the screen and
choose 'properties'. Put a tick in the 'hide inactive icons' checkbox and
then click on 'customise'. You can then choose if you want to hide these
individual icons all the time, when not in use or to show all the time.

Hope this helps my friend.. Big Liam :)

These represent programs running in the background. I assume that
what you want is not just to delete the icons, but to stop the
programs from running.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many
people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how many of
these programs you run, but which.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with google
searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

It's called the notification area in XP, not the system tray.

Hi Robert,

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

Thanks for all of the help! I think maybe the best idea
is to leave everything alone.
