icon change for files

MatthewS

I know how to change the icons for Folders, but I am not sure how to do this
for files, since the menu tabs that appear when I right click on the file and
select 'Properties' is different than when I do the same on a Folder.

Is there a way that this is possible -- for me to change the icon for
specific files such as a .txt file, or a word .docx file, etc. ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

See if this is what you want.

Windows Explorer

Tools / Folder Options / File Types
Scroll to Icon or File Name / Advanced / Change Icon

For all files of a specific type, yes ala kws's post.

For one or selected files of a particular type, no, no way I know of to do
it directly. It can be done indirectly in two ways...

1. Make a shortcut to the file and change the shortcut's icon.

2. Make a new file type. For example, suppose you have a continuing need
for a group of text files with a different icon...

a) make a new file type with an externsion as you like - "txxt" perhaps
b) use the advanced button in the New window to associate with whatever
c) use the advanced button in the File types window to change the icon

Not for individual files, no. The OS decides what icon to show for
data files by finding the program they are associated with, and
displaying its icon. There is no place in an individual *.txt file to
store an icon.
