ICMP

I realize this isn't a TCP/IP group, however, I'm impressed by the
group's responses to questions in general.

What is generating the large number of ICMP packets that are being
blocking by my hardware firewall ???

TIA

Most likely someone trying to ping you. A large enough number of ping
requests will slow things down.

OOOOOOOOk. Why would someone be trying to "ping" me ??
Are we talking hacker ?? I'm trying to find out the REAL WORLD
implications of this activity. Thanks for your response.

Could be a hacker. How many pings per minute are you seeing? At least the
firewall is working. How often do you power off your router? Coming back
on I expect it would get a different IP address.

The "pinging" occurs sporadically and maybe several times a minute for
approximately 8-12 TOTAL pings. Sorry, but I erased the last incident so, I
can't give you a definitive answer.
I'm not running through a router, but a motherboard based, hardware firewall
(Nvidia chipset on an ASUS m/b). However, I am running DSL and sometimes I
unplug the entire system if I'm leaving for several hours.
Is it possible the pinging is related to powering up the DSL modem ??
Appreciate your responses.

This stuff goes on all the time with these young idiots trying to find
someone to infect or mess up. The best thing to do is just tell the
firewall to quit telling you about them and go on about your business.
There really isn't anything you can do to stop them besides not connecting
when you don't need the Internet.

Or, if your IP never changes, as in my case, you could ask your ISP to
change it for you. It may not eliminate the problem though; it'll depend on
how the wannabe criminal is processing his list.
Have you notified your ISP to see if they are willing to do anything
about it? Never hurts to try.

You get on with a fresh, never-used-by-anyone and you'll be getting pinged
within an hour.
