IBM OEM CD?

Hewlett Packard certainly won't give you a true WinXP CD, because I asked
them only 3 weeks ago. They said that they cannot because of their licensing
agreement with Microsoft. I doubt if IBM's licensing agreeement with
Microsoft is any different than the one that HP has. These OEMs probably pay
less to Microsoft if they provide a recovery CD set instead of a true OS
setup CD. Microsoft would prefer that all OEMs go this route in order to
reduce piracy.

There are still some OEMs who are providing true Microsoft supplied WinXP
OEM CDs though.

them from being able to supply an OEM WinXP OS CD to their customers (but they
can't give you a retail CD, if that is what you mean with a "a true WinXP CD").
As far as I know, Microsoft is indifferent on how the OEM makes it possible to
restore the OS, only that it is possible in some way.

I never asked HP for anything more than an OEM CD, and that was the reply
that I got. I see no reason for HP to lie to me if I was willing to buy a CD
from them. They didn't even quote such a CD at *any* price. Now don't you
think they would be happy to help a customer; even happier if they could
sell me something at the same time?

Microsoft gives OEMs various licensing options; not "one size fits all". The
Recovery CD enables a restore to original configuration while greatly
reducing the chance of piracy. Microsoft charges less for it, but the lower
price is more than offset by lower piracy losses. You don't think the
Recovery CD set is an invention of Microsoft?

I bought my IBM T23 ThinkPad several years ago with XP Pro pre-installed and
did not receive
a Windows CD. I understand that some manufacturers furnish OEM CDs with
laptops
and that others will furnish them on request. What is IBM's policy? If I can
get the CD from them, how do I go about it? (I posted this to the ThinkPad
NG but no one had an answer).

I think the recovery set idea came into the minds of the owners of
Packard-Bell one Christmas, just before I got my first new IBM-compatible.
While it was a Christmas gift, I probably would have been happier with a box
of cheese and sausages, and my brother would have saved himself the hundreds
of dollars he spent on the Packard-Bell turkey he gave me.

No, I do not think that this was an invention of Microsoft?

The support guys? Not likely. It is much quicker for them to solve a case by
asking (demanding) the customer to restore to factory state with a recovery CD
set (and I would think that this is the only way a lot of the customers would be
able to get their computer up and running again without sending the computer
away).

Microsoft personnel have stated in this newsgroup that it is up to the OEM
reseller to decide to supply a OEM CD or not with an OEM computer (no price
difference from Microsoft)...

Greetings --

For a definitive statement of IBM's policy, wouldn't it be
simplest just to ask IBM?

Apparently not, Bruce.

Besides, while the OP asked about IBM's policies, look at all the useful
information we readers obtained regarding H-P's policies. :>

We had the same thing happen when we purchased a Thinkpad T23 also. We
called IBM and they said it was a mistake and sent up the restore CD no
charge. Don't know if the same will happen for you since you waited so long
tho. Good luck.
