Hi,
My neighbour has just bought a second hand pc.
I think the previous owner had a broadband connection. I am trying to set up
a dial up connection for them but it is saying that there is no dial tone.
Under network connections there is a lan.
I have disabled this but it makes no change. Do i need to delete the lan to
enable a dialup connection?
Help appreciated.

ensure there is a dial tone by checking it with a normal
phone, then untick the 'wait for dialtone button' in the
dialup connection propeties...

Thanks for the reply.
I did untick the `wait for dialtone` box.
They have a double phone socket connection, one for the phone and one spare
for the pc. There is a dial tone on the phone until i plug in the lead from
the pc. Then the line goes dead. I am no expert by any means and dont really
understand what a LAN is and why it is needed for a dial up connection. I
have tried to delete the lan but can`t. Should i just reinstall xp home?
Thanks again.

The LAN (local area network) connection has nothing to do with dial-up
and can't be causing the problem.

The phone goes dead when plugging the phone line into the PC? The
PC's dial-up modem could be defective.

You need to go to the Network Connections folder and create a dial-up
connection for the ISP.
