the i386 is generally
found on the root drive
and also on the win cd.

without the cd, you
options are limited.

therefore, you would
have to rely on other
features like system
restore and backups.

perhaps, your computer
did not come with a cd
and instead has a hidden
recovery partition with the
files necessary to restore
your system to it factory state.

so if the o.s. came pre installed,
then there is likely a holographic
looking sticker on the machine
with your product key.

the above will likely be elaborated
upon at your computers homesite
with other faq's, drivers, updates,
etc...

if not, then maybe you can
borrow someone's win cd or
simply purchase a new one.

incidentally, what exactly
are you experiencing with
your machine?

The "i386" folder may not exist anywhere on your installed system. It is
part of the installation media for Windows XP - but is not necessarily on
your computer after installation.

What method did your original Windows XP installer (likely those you
purchased your computer from) give you to install Windows XP fresh?

Well, no, it normally wouldn't be. Why do you expect to find such a
sub-folder there?

also my other problem is i dont have the windows xp
pro cd to boot my computer back to original settings..

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

It might be a hidden folder. Open a cmd prompt and type the following:

attrib c:\windows\i386

Did it show up?
