It would be usefull to have some option to switch rapidly between using a
proxy or not. It should also be visible in the IE status bar whether you are
using a proxy or not.
Why?
1/ Users that have a portable from their work, often must use a proxy server
in the company, while at home, they must connect to internet in a different
way. Very often the internet settings are managed (restricted) by Active
Directory, and the users are not even able to change these settings manually
at home!
2/ Some web-enabled devices (routers, switches, printers...) don't like to
be contacted via a proxy, but should be targetted directly. Sometimes you
forget the proxy is enabled in IE (or you didn't add that device to bypass
the proxy), and it's impossible to connect with the device. Sometimes you
don't think about the proxy. With a flashing "proxy-on" icon, you would
quickly see what can cause the trouble.
Of course it would be possible to change these settings quickly using some
scripts, but not everyone has the knowledge to do that.
