I **want** Word to ask me to save if file already exists!

Excel prompts if I try to overwrite a file using "Save as..", and I'm
wondering if I can get Word to do that also. This is for any document; I'm
not worried about the infamous "normal.dot" problem that so many people have.
Anybody have any ideas?? I looked through the "Options" tabs and didn't see
anything and short of writing an autoopen macro in normal.dot I can't find
another way. Thanks!

Word does this automatically. If you're not getting a prompt, either you are
not, in fact, using the same folder, filename, and extension; or something
else is wrong, such as a dodgy macro or a virus.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more specific. In Excel, if file "a.xls"
already exists, and I open and modify it, and then try to save it with the
same filename using the "Save as..." command, I get the prompt. If I just
use the "Save" command, of course, I don't.

In Word, I don't get this prompt with "Save as..". I *do* get a Word prompt
if I try to save "a.doc" as "b.doc" and "b.doc" already exists on the hard
drive, but not if I'm saving it using the same filename.

It's not a macro proboem, since the only ones I have in normal.dot are to
make two Greek characters. I also tried this on someone else's computer and
got exactly the same pattern so I'm pretty sure it's not a virus. Any
thoughts? Thanks!

Yes, you're right. In Word, if you do a Save As with the same file name, you
get no message. You could write a macro to detect that and prompt you, but
there's no setting for it.
