Eh? Get out into the light? Have you been operating a hacked/cracked
version of XP in a cave for a year or two? LOL!

Well, you've obviously bought XP Pro, what is stopping you activating it
over the Internet?

@drian.

Yes I guess you are right ....... Should I just run the XP Pro CD over my
version and let it pick up the settings....then activate it .....Will this
be OK?

Depending on what the not-copasetic version you are currently running will
determine what version will work.
See link below to change CD key.

if using the web based newsgroup.
Change CD key.

"HOW TO: Change the Volume Licensing Product Key on a Windows XP SP1-Based
Computer"

The above tells how to install a legitimate license key on an illicit copy
of XP. (Apparently, a number of innocents bought systems from vendors who
installed dubious copies of XP.)

Did you install it over the XP you had? I would have performed a clean
install. So long as you used the serial number that came with your XP Pro
CD, then activate that, you should be fine. Note I said "should", as I've
never performed an "over the top" install. I always perform clean installs.

Hope this helps.

Go here. Reboot is necessary.

Absolutely not necessary, as he said he was very happy with his current
setup. XP upgrades are very close to clean installs anyway when done
properly as they backup the relevant files and delete the Windows to be
upgraded, then after copying the new files to the hard drive the backup
files are restored.

Of course it's not necessary, but I've seen more corrupt and non-working
systems as the result of an upgrade than I have with full installs. I
personally would never recommend an upgrade over a full install.

Since you haven't tried it, you should. I am sure you would be pleasantly
surprised with the XP upgrade. The idea is to prep for a clean install, but
perform the upgrade. 8-)
In the op's situation, neither a clean or repair install is necessary if the
correct CD key is purchased. The key can be changed without doing either.

Oh yes, absolutely, I haven't tried it, I'll admit that. I'm basing
experience on W2K/WNT/WME/W98 upgrade installs which I assumed weren't that
radically different from the XP upgrade (or the reverse).

The XP upgrade is in a completely different league from previous upgrades.
