I want to allow additions but not edits in a form

Coud you set these properties for your form?

Allow Edits No
Allow Additions Yes

Open the property sheet in the form's design view.
Go to the Data tab.
Set Allow Edits to No
Make sure Allow Additions is set to Yes

Can this be given spefically for various fields. I do not want the user to
update only certain fields.

No, the doesn't allow editing for the entire form, except on new records. If
you want to disable or lock (or both) only certain specific fields do it
like this:

http://www.datastrat.com/Code/LockIt.txt

Put that code in a standard module and call it from the Current event of
your form.
