Like I said in a previous post. I had this same problem with a gateway
laptop I bought last year and now with my new Compaq. I was able to fix the
"jumping problem" with help from gateway last year. When I bought my compaq
this year I couldn't fix it after 2 hours on the phone with compaq. Tonight i
decided to check every setting on the gateway and match it with the settings
on the compaq. One thing I noticed is the pointing device on the compaq was
ALPS (or something along the lines of those initials) and the pointing device
on the gateway was synaptics PS/2 port pointing device. I went to the
synaptics website and surfed around a bit and found "support & driver
downloads". I took a chance and downloaded the driver for my version of vista
(even though my pointing device was ALPS) and it seems to have worked. When I
now go into the device manager my pointing device is no longer ALPS but now
is Synaptics. I am not sure if this is the best way to fix this annoying
problem but for now it worked so I am thrilled!
