I pick English UK but US stays

G

garethamiga

Hello.
On Windows XP Home, I would like British English language.

I went to Control Panel/Regional & Language Options and
selected English (United Kingdom) but Windows keeps words
such as 'Favorites' on the desktop (I want 'Favourites').

I emailed Microsoft; they just said to do what I did: go
to Control Panel/Regional & Language Options and select
English (United Kingdom.
Does that mean Microsoft's idea of British English
is 'color', 'dialing', etc?!

Please help! Perhaps you think I'm being petty - no way,
I just like things how I like them.

You are attempting to do more than those settings are designed.
You are effectively wanting to change the language of the GUI.
You can't.
You should buy Windows XP in the language you want, it seems you
bought the US version.

If course the point would be moot if the americans would learn how to spell!

We Americans have done the English language a great service
by eliminating all of the unnecessary extra letters in
words such as "cheque" and "favour." The British (and the
rest of the sycophantic Commonwealth)owe us a debt of
gratitude. Instead we get whining. British English is a
dying language--why not just get with the program?

I am using the UK version.

Also, someone whom I know has the correct spellings so it
*is* possible.
He bought the computer like that.

Because I'm British... I'm my language, so why should I use am idiots
version just because a bunch of cowboys & hillbillies couldn't spell? (Or
read for that matter!) :D

If you really want to do the English language a service, stop murdering it
and do what the other 70%+ do in the US,speak Spanish :)

Hmm.. you know, as I re-read this I realise that probably a few people will
take it the wrong way :) For that, I'll apologise now as I really am NOT
calling Americans stupid :) Please do take it with a huge pinch of salt as
it was intended...

We understand that Lorne.
After you learn to spell correctly you can work on that one next. :)

If you have the answer, email me if you like -
gareth(RemoveThis)[email protected]

but don`t email just to say how the US streamlines the
language or something like that, thanks anyway.

Thank you!

I already gave the answer in the first post.
Quoted below:

| ...eliminating all of the unnecessary extra letters in words

Then, why do you add an "l" at the end of the verb "instal", giving "install"?

Then, why do you complicate verbs such as "administer" and "degrade", giving
"administrate" and "degradate"?

Then, why be tautological, as in "unnecessary extra"?

Then, why do you still have the unnecessary extra letters:
- "h" in "whining"
- "n" and "s" in "unnecessary"
- "e" in "language", "service" and "gratitude"
- "l" in "all"

Then, why not stop using the letters "c" and "y" altogether?
Use "i" and "s" or "k" instead: as in "servis" and "unecesari"

Then, why not stop using "ph", as in "sikofantik"?

I have seen it with my own eyes...
that bar at the top of a window:

File Edit View Favourites [note letter 'u']

If changing the language is not possible, how does
Microsoft enter the words at the programming stage?
Answer:
The menus are only text in a file; if there is no
language choice for the user to pick, he should be able
to edit the file manually.
One example of this is Personal Paint for the Amiga; the
user can have any menu in any language that he wants:- he
just types it.
