The upgrade requires either an existing Win98 installation
or a Win98 CD. If you don't have either of these then it
is not an upgrade but a new installation.

originally, 98 SE came preinstalled on my hard drive, without any software
cd-rom. can i get a replacement cd-rom??? if so, how?

1. You can load XP on the old drive then Close it to the new drive.
2. Find someone that has 98 and copy the CD so you have it to fake the
upgrade. Sorry, I feel this is legal but yes, its a gray area legal.
3. Call your vendor. They should be able to send you one
4. Return the upgrade to the store and by full version.

I suspect you really mean this:
- Make the new disk the primary master disk.
- Make the old disk the primary slave disk.
- Load WinXP on the new disk. The installation process
will detect the qualifying version of Win98 on the old disk.
- Remove the old disk when finished.

Actually meant to say 'upgrade the 98 with the XP upgrade on the
original HD. Then clone the new OS over to the new HD.'.

Just didn't flow the words right. I take it he has a working 98 HD
and wants to put XP on a new HD.

Ultimately since he has only and upgrade and no previous CD, he's going
to have an issue reloading if HD#2 crashes. So he needs a copy of
98, and they should be cheeeeeeep!. or get a full version of XP.

*** Why bother cloning? Having both disks connected at
*** the same time would do the trick very nicely!

Personally Monkey, I'd swap drives, keep the 98 as a backup for a
minute, load XP on the new drive as C: drive, formatting NTFS as you
load XP, and then load all your apps fresh. Download the SP's and
updates and bingo you are ready to go.
Now you can connect your old 98 drive as a slave or in a USB enclosure
and start moving the data over. Not the programs but the data.

Its a bit more cumbersome but you'll skip and 98 drivers that might
carry over. You'll also maybe find some things you don't really want
and get a cleaner install. At the end, it should be better.

But that's my way!. It works for me.

Not necessarily. The OP can do a fresh installation of WinXP.
If so then the existing installation is only used to check if he
qualifies for the upgrade.

He has an upgrade XP cd, not full edition, and he does not have a Win98 cd.
He cannot install the way you advise because he has no cd for the shiny
media check during the installation of the XP upgrade edition. Therefore,
Win98 must be installed on the computer and he must run XP Setup from the
Win98 desktop.

I have seen many web tutorials on how to create an installation disc
from a "Recovery Disc". If you search they should be easy to find. I
would guess that you need to have an "i386" folder to do that, though.
