I need help with tables

I am building a site, and I am using a free template that I found somewhere
on the web. It's going to be a 20 page or so site. The home page doesn't have
that much text on it. The other pages will. So, I figured I'd copy and paste
my home page into blank pages for my templates. Problem is, some pages have
alot of text, and they are pulling the navigation bar down with it. And only
one side too.

Here is a link to a screenshot of the home page, which is the way it's
supposed to be..

Now here is page where there is alot of text in the middle, and it's
dragging the left hand side with it.

I tried everything, adding rows, adding colums, splitting rows and colums..
nothing I do is working. Is there a way to "lock" the cells in the left
column in place, so no matter what.. they won't adjust themselves.

I'm at a total standstill, and I have no idea how to keep everything in tact
as I add content to the page. Can anyone explain to me what to do?

Thanks!

in the left column under cell properties, set to top and left, then insert a table in the left
column to hold the content.

Thanks for the reply Tom.

Please bear with me, because I'm somewhat a newbie to all of this.

After I copy my main page to a blank page to act as a template on my next
page, I right click on the left column, and set it to top and left. I think I
understand that part, but inserting a table is where I'm getting myself a
little messed up. When I insert a table, it moves everything around. The left
column has about 5 or so rows, so do I need to insert a table in each of
those rows? Or just one huge table? And if so, how do I do that?

Again, sorry for the newbie question.

In the original left column, merge all rows, so you just have one empty column, then insert your
table with 5 rows, etc.

One thing I found when doing this sort of thing was that the total size of
all the columns had to match the width of the whole original table. i.e. if
your original table was 400px wide and you had say two columns, one could be
100px and the other would have to be 300px to make up to 400px. Also then
insert tables within tables and make them slightly smaller to take the info.

Don't get too obsessed with widths and dimensions. The most stable tables
of all are those with minimal such specifications, which can thereby
collapse around their contents....

still not working. When I do that, after I put the cursor in the middle
field, and hit enter to gain more space.. the left and right colums are
spreading apart and going down right along with it. I can't believe something
as simple as this is giving me a problem.

I need help, and quick too because this site is going live on January 1st :(

This is how tables behave. Make one cell in a row taller and all cells in
that row get taller. Make one cell in a column wider and all cells in that
column get wider. The trick is to understand how tables behave and to work
with it, rather than to struggle against it.

One way to solve this problem is to make the left and right columns have top
alignment so that their contents stay snug with the top of the cell no
matter how tall it is (the default alignment in a cell is "middle").
