I need help to install IE6 SP1 Upgrade

What is happening here?

I went to MS site below to download IE6 SP1 Upgrade (ie6setup.exe).

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

It downloaded fine - but then when I double clicked on it to install
the upgrade, the install failed, saying that:

Setup was unable to download information about available installation
sites.

Setup may have been unable to use your current proxy server settings.

The network may be busy; you can retry now or if you continue having
this problem, try setup at a later time.

This is bad enough, but I also notice that my non-XP firewall is
DISABLED when the error message occurs.

I didn't want to, but I tried the install again with the firewall
manually disabled, but I get the same install error.

Can anyone tell me what to do (or not to do)?

Thanks

Hi there,

I am pretty sure you will find your error message, and a suggested fix,
listed at the URL below:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#error_install

Oh wow!

I found two areas of interest there. One was for W95 (I am in XP) and
says the error can be caused by an apostrophe in the windows folder
name. How unlikely is that. Anyway I don't. The other listed the
following possibilities:
* You have an Internet-related file that is damaged.
* You have a damaged registry entry.
* You have a corrupted Setup .cab file.
* You try to install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 but it
is not successfully installed.
* There is an invalid pointer to the Program Files folder in the
registry.
* NTFS file system permissions are not set correctly on the folder
that you are installing to (applies only to Windows NT).

All I wanted to do was look at the 'Mitchell on Demand' web site,
which seemed to require something beyond my long-time-working IE6.
So much for that site. So much for IE6 SP1.

Thanks.
