I changed the administrator account but I mispelled it and now I can
not login. I have Windows 2000 Professional. Their is no floppy drive
on this PC. Also in Dos I can't see the CD-Rom. I have a Linux
password recover program that someone let me borrow. That allows you
to change the password but i can't try to use it without a floppy
drive.i have went into Dos and looked at the folders in documents and
settings but the names are shortened b/c of DOS. Is their away to
find out what the long file name is in DOS?
Thanks for your advice
You renamed the Administraor account (
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320053)? So mispell the renamed Administrator account the same way to login. The Administrator account (even if renamed) is exactly what its name implies: it is for administrative use only! Login under your other account that has admin privileges. During the install, Windows creates the "Administrator" account by that name and capitalization. You cannot delete this account but you can rename it. Is that what you meant by "mispelled it"?
"no floppy drive on this PC"
So, put one in.
"in Dos I can't see the CD-Rom"
No floppy and yet you are in DOS. How is that? Are you dual booting? You only mentioned one operating system.
"i have went into Dos"
Then you're in the wrong newsgroup because Windows 2000 doesn't have DOS. Since you say you don't have a floppy then it's not that you used a DOS-bootable floppy to get into DOS. Maybe you meant by "Dos" was that you went to a command line by booting into Recovery Console mode (
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=229716). That in itself means you had to login as Administrator. Recovery Console mode demands that you log in using an admin account. So you already know the password. If you managed to boot into Recovery Console and did not have to specify a password (even a blank one) then your Windows install is corrupt and you have bigger problems (
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238836). You won't ferret out the password by hunting around in files. When the Recovery Console appears, it lists the available operating systems and you select one (even if there is only one). I recall that you do not have to specify the admin account to login under but you do have to specify the password, so I don't recall if it shows you the Administrator account by its name (so you could see what it got renamed to).
So what is your REAL question? How to hack the password? Or how to determine what the Administrator account got renamed to?
