During a move over the summer, my Windows XP Pro disc got lost, and now i
need to reformat my hard drive because of a virus, i have the certificate of
authenticity and everything else, i just have no idea how to get another
disc, ive tried going to the microsoft help thing, but because i have a
system builder/OEM software, they wont help me, so if anyone knows where i
can get my disc bakc, id be sooo appreciative
~Thanks

Hi

If you had an OEM XP CD, then you will need to contact the supplier of that
disk to see if they can help you.

I lost a $100 bill in move. I still have the serial number, can anyone tell
me how to get my $100 back?

Sure-- just send the lost serial number and a certified check for $200 to
Seriously Unused Cash King Emergency Replacement Services c/o larry and I'll
get them to replace your $100 promptly.

Why don't you try removing the virus before you
spend another $200 to replace your lost disc, and
reformatting your disk? This would be simpler and
cheaper. There are a lot of free antivirus products
out in cyberspace.

Jake,

Having a virus is not a reason to reformat. Clean your system.

Visit a nearby store that sells computer software and purchase
a new copy of Windows XP.

If Jake has a functional OS except
that it's infected by a virus or spyware,
doesn't it make sense for him to at
least attempt to resolve the virus or
spyware problem(s) before rushing out
to spend another $200 on a license?

If he's successful in ridding his system
of viruses/spyware, he may be able
to limp by with his installed OS until
Vista SP1 is released.

There are other possible solutions other
than constantly harping on buying a
new CD/license. Not every problem
requires an automatic "Buy a new
CD/license" answer. We're not all
wealthy people.

Well, you could put in a claim with your movers. However, it looks
like you'll have to spring for a new copy. Cheer up, at least it
wasn't your TV.

Depending on the infection you should be able to clean the system
without needing a reformat. That said to replace your lost CD copy one
from someone who has the same type as you lost. The media is not
unique, just the license key. As long as you copy the same type of
installation CD, i.e. OEM and Home v. Pro, it should work with your key.
