It's driving me nuts. Big problems with Samsung CD RW 240B drive for
the last few months. All the suggestions haven't helped. I noticed a post
from 3/20 about a cd drive not working. One answer to the OP was to look in
Event Viewer and see if there are any references to problems with Atapi.
I've got one that when I look at properties of the event it says "the driver
located a device with old or outdated firmware. It will not be used"
I proceeded to Samsung's site and d'loaded some updated? firmware and
tried to install it but when I tried to unzip the file I was told "the
device is not accessible".
Can I update the firmware without the device being accessible? Or is
the drive shot?

Save yourself time and frustration.. buy a new drive..

Mike's right -
"Time and Effort is sometimes more expensive than Money".

Besides putting up with months of PC aggravation trying to
get something to work, this maxim can also be applied to:
Growing/Maintaining a Fescue Lawn,
Doing your own Plumbing
Cleaning out Gutters.
Shade-Tree mechanic work on modern, Computerized cars.

OK! Any recommendations as to a replacement manufacturer? I've seen
some Sony's and I/O Magic CD RW drives at Staples recently. They seem
awfully inexpensive. The Sony was $49 after rebates and the I/O was $39 with
no rebates.
Either of these any good. The Sony came with software, IDE cable and some
Nero burning software. Forget what was in the I/O box.

You should note that most Samsug CD/DVD drives can only have their firmwares
updated if the drive is set to MASTER only.

You should consider replacing the unit with a Sony DVD _+ RW DL (dual layer)
drive.
