Hi Robin,

Have you try Properties in Start. I know you can make changes there for
size, etc, etc, but I dont remember about the Bold. You have to experiment.

Good luck

Hi Tom,

I'm sure you know what _you_ are talking about, but for some of us who need
a few more words, would you please flesh out your instructions just a bit?

Thanks.

Hi Robin,

As you see in my other post that I made two minutes later than yours, I'm
glad I wasn't the only one scratching my head and saying "huh??" :>

Hi Robin,

The ease with which you can change the Start Menu Text to "Bold" would
depend entirely on whether you are using the Windows XP Style "Start Menu"
or the "Classic Start menu". My personally preference has always leaned
toward the Classic Start Menu, so upon any install of Windows XP my first
operation is to change from the Windows XP Style start menu to the Classic
menu.

Changing the Text to Bold in the Start Menu(when using the Classic Start
menu) is a relatively easy process as Tom has already alluded to:
1. Right-click on the Desktop and choose "Properties".
2. Click on the "Appearance" tab and then on the "Advanced" button at the
bottom of the dialog box.
3. When the "Advanced Appearance" dialog box appears, use the "Item" scroll
menu to select "Menu" and then press the "B" to Bolden the text.

This will Bolden the text in the "Classic Start Menu" as well as all other
drop down and Context menus.

If you're using the XP-style appearance, those settings are contained in the
"luna.msstyles" file located in:
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna

When you have Windows XP Style selected, Windows loads up luna.msstyles,
then has "uxtheme.dll" verify that it is digitally signed by Microsoft and
then uxtheme.dll "skins" the GUI.

I think that the luna.msstyles file can be altered but it's not a trivial
task.

The XP skinning engine "uxtheme.dll" will only accept digitally signed(by
Microsoft) .msstyles files, so you would probably have to obtain a patched
uxtheme.dll file that would accept unsigned .msstyles files by removing the
security protection for .msstyles(something I wouldn't reccomend since
uxtheme.dll is a System file).

It would also mean downloading a third party program like "resEdit" to alter
the luna.msstyles file.

she doesn't want the classic look- she wants the xp look
darnit- why can't MS just make this easy to do like having a font section
with a bold

btw if you do this in XP style it bolds everything (I have it that way
already in Menu) execpt the start/program icon/folder text.

I want the text to go bold

"darnit- why can't MS just make this easy to do"

LOL...I feel your pain Robin, but the only information I've ever read on the
subject(changing the Text Style on the XP Style Start menu) is to get hold
of
a patched uxtheme.dll file with the security protection for .msstyles files
removed. And then make your own .msstyles file.

Microsoft designed Windows XP so that only Microsoft could use the skin
format they created - .msstyles. Apparently they didn't want third parties
to monkey around with it and so they made sure that their skinning "engine"
(UXTHEME.DLL) would only use Microsoft digitally signed .msstyle files.

One way to get around uxtheme.dll issue is to create your own skin format,
"WindowBlinds 3" did this by creating its own skin format with a .uis file
extension that is then passed to the XP skinning engine uxtheme.dll.

The other way, as mention already, is to use a patched uxtheme.dll file(with
the security protection for .msstyles files removed so you can create your
own .msstyles file.

I've never tried any of this myself, but these are the only two methods I've
ever heard of to get where you are trying to go with the XP Style Start
Menu.

btw the only way you can do this as Tom explained to me via an email is to
set XP to "Classic" in "Appearnce". When I did that it puts the OS back to
the Classic Mode like you were in Win98 and after playing with the rest of
the settings I could get the start menu- folder/icon text Bold.

When I bring over their new computer on Friday I will show them the
differences and give them the choice of which one they want.

Thanks Everyone for all your help, especially Tom
