I was cleaning up my XP laptop, deleting old files (or so I thought). I
deleted the Internet Explorer folder under Programs, thinking it was an old
version. Oops. It wasn't, or at least the folder contained necessary files.

I tried to back up to a Restore Point, but the system would not accept any.
Can't explain that.

I'm out in the middle of nowhere on a dial-up connection. I assume that I
need to download and reinstall IE. That could be a long process. Any other
solution? If not, I guess I'll drive to the local (an hour away) library to
get a speedy connection.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Try system Restore to before the deletion then tell us what you have been
digging to get rid of may we can help.

If you are able to get into the control panel and open add/remove programs
you might click on add/remove windows components. Look for internet explorer
and try to reinstall it from there.

Hello,

Internet Explorer is part of XP and can not be removed.

You can find the EXE file in
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore
from which you can right-click, send to, Desktop (create shortcut)

Or you can place the desktop shortcut by
Start > Control Panel > Display > Desktop (tab) > Customize Desktop > CHECK
Internet Explorer > OK > OK

Problem is I deleted the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer, so there is
nothing left to right-click.

I found ie.inf and tried right-clicking to install. It tried but kept asking
for various support files. I searched the drive and pointed to the ones I
could locate. Installation continued, but in the end, IE still would not
work. Clicking on the shortcut causes a momentary IE window to appear --
just a flash really -- and then no evidence that it actually ran.

Unfortunately, I am on the road and do not have access to original disks. I
do appreciate your effort on my behalf.

I can't get any of my restore points to restore. Windows keeps says it can't
restore from that point.

I was just trying to clean off the disk, get back to the basics, and thought
the c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder was old stuff. I normally use
FireFox, which still works, but the wife is more familiar with IE, so I am
looking for the easiest way to get it back. We are traveling and do not have
original Windows disks with us. I'm assuming I can download IE once I can
get to a high-speed connection.

I did try that but it seems to fail (although no error messages occur). I
guess some critical files no longer exist on the computer.

Thanks to you (and others) for help and suggestions. Copying the folder
should have worked. I guess I had already screwed up other settings, trying
to recover, after the initial deletion, and now nothing seems to work. I'm
resigned to leaving the system as is until I get home and can reinstall
Windows. Seems like the safest option. I can still use Outlook Express and
Foxfire, so it's still usable. Thanks again.

I suggest you try to convince your better half that Foxfire is a better
browser.
