I JUST installed the KB89083 removal tool, Now I cannot find it
I downloaded the security tool, I thought it would (as it stated)) run
automatically.
I did a search in my computer and found the .EXE file Prefetch folder. I was
Not able to run the utility and would appreciate any help with this as soon
as possible.
Thank you in advance! Char

Hi charisme,
Type MRT.EXE in the "Run" dialog box. (Your Microsoft
Malicious Software Removal Tool update is called MRT.EXE and is located in
your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder).

charisme

Hello! It was nice to see a name I know! Thank you Tim!
I typed in MRT.EXE , Start, > Run It came back; "Windows cannot find MRT.EXE "
After reading the other posts I am wondering if I should delete it from the
Prefetch folder and download it again.
This is a complicated on - going mess!
- Do Appreciate You though... Thank You!

charisme,
The file MRT.EXE is a regular MS Windows Update. Basically
they give you a new copy ONCE A MONTH! It's unbelievable that you don't have
it on your computer. Manually look for it by typing:

dir /a /s c:\mrt.exe

....at the Command Prompt. If it's a no-show, then, yes, do try and download
it again directly from the microsoft website on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displayLang=en

as this post's line-wrap may have disabled it from working properly)

Dear charisme,
P.S. Here is a little trick; If you have WinZip on
your computer then you can open it with that and 'manually' extract the file
mrt.exe from out of it. However, if it is NOT on your computer already, it
may well be that you have some malware on your computer. What Antivirus
software are you using? Try downloading and running this on your computer
as well:

MalwareBytes from: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Hi Tim! The MRT.EXE is in Prefetch, I went ahead and downloaded it from
straight from the link you sent. It was the same place that I had downloaded
it this afternoon.
on the File Download dialog box, do one of the following: *** They
recommended I use Open/ Run *** I was not able to do that so I chose the Save
I saved it in a folder I already had named Downloads.*** Please see the ***

* To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program
from its current location.
* To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later
time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

MRT.exe is almost certainly *not* in the prefetch folder (unless you
deliberately put it there for some bizarre reason). Perhaps the
prefetch folder contains a file named MRT.pf, but that's something else
entirely (as you found when you tried to run MRT.pf).

Forget the prefetch folder. Prefetch is a special folder used by the
operating system. Nothing there is of any use to you. Do not even
bother looking in the prefetch folder. And don't delete files from the
prefetch folder. In fact, you will be far better off if you act as if
the prefetch folder doesn't exist.

Hi charisme,
Yes, the prefetch folder contains files with names
SIMILAR to those of programs ON YOUR SYSTEM that have been run before,
holding prefetch data on them so they can be executed quicker next time they
are run. They have names like MRT.EXE-1B606482.pf with the extension, you
will note, of .pf
So they are NOT going to be the file MRT you were looking for. I can't
see why you are having such difficulty with getting this file. When you
[first] download the update it is called:

windows-kb890830-v2.9.exe

....then you 'run' it - (by double-clicking upon it) ...then it 'installs'
itself as MRT.exe in your C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory. If you can't find
it, do a search for this filename instead, perhaps you haven't 'run' the
update yet. If it's still not there after you have run the file
'windows-kb890830-v2.9.exe' then you could extract the MRT.exe file form
this by means of opening WinZip and then choosing File > Open and browse for
the location of the 'windows-kb890830-v2.9.exe' update. The very best luck
to you. I do hope you get this resolved soon.

Is there another way of searching for it?

Just for fun, I tried to reproduce what you're doing.

I started at - KB890830

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890830

The download they offer is here.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

The file I got from Microsoft is...

windows-kb890830-v2.9.exe 9,924,040 bytes

If I examine that file with 7ZIP, this is what is compressed inside that file.

mrt.exe 24,921,544 bytes
mrtstub.exe 25,032 bytes

Now, I used Windows Update to get the April updates already.
If I look in C:\WINDOWS\system32 , I can see I already have

mrt.exe 24,921,544 bytes

So there is a good chance they're the same animal. I can
double click the C:\WINDOWS\system32\mrt.exe file, and
bring up a dialog and carry out a test if I want.

But I'm not going to double click on the windows-kb890830-v2.9.exe
right now, because I already have a copy of the April mrt.exe .

So maybe that will give you some idea where you can find a copy.

You're dealing with a complete fool, so don't get your hopes up.

Open Folder Options, available from either Explorer, or Control Panel,
click the View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders", deselect
"Hide protected operating system files..) and then you might be able to
find the file.
