Ok I had a anti-virus program running and I set it on auto delete. Then I walked away when I got back half of my windows/system32 file had been deleted. Now i cannot open or run n e of my programs and iam in dire need of help. The only thing i can think of is just reinstalling windows, but I figured i post here 1st and hope to get a answer.

Hi,

Why do you think they are legitimate files? What sort of error messages are
you getting? I've yet to see any AV software delete legitimate system files.

The error message that were coming up at the start of windows are cannot find rrssrrscv.exe. Also when I go to run a program like winamp i get a error message like windows cannot find winamp.exe

To replace missing or corrupt original OS files simply put your XP CD in the drive and if your autoplay starts wait until the selection window comes up and close out of it. Now go>start\run and type in sfc /scannow This will do a comparison of the files on your system with the originals found on the disk and if there are any missing or corrupt they will be reinstalled. Be sure to put the space in after sfc and before the / . SFC=System File Check. Good luck. {:~)

This is only good if she/he has not installed SP1, if she
has installed sp1 and has the cd (sp1) then she will be OK.

Yes as "SteveL" wrote I have insatlled Sp1 so sfc /scannow did not work for me. Als o i just got done trying to restore the lost files by doing a system restore, I didnt have any luck there. All my missing System32 where not tranfered in the restore. I not apply to unstall the service pack either, so my minds running blank.

First, change that setting now.
Secondly, run this edit and hope it helps:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Hi,

First, rrssrrscv.exe is a trojan, not a legitimate system file. Likely it is
that your antivirus software remove the infecting file, but not the startup
reference to it. Happens a lot. Start/run regedit, navigate to these keys
one at a time:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Look in each for a string in the right pane that references rrssrrscv.exe
and delete *just* that string. Close the registry editor when completed.
This should resolve the startup error.

However, your problems are not over, as the infection has also munged your
..exe and .lnk file associations. Fortunately, MVP Doug Knox has easy fixes
for both of these on his web site, www.dougknox.com , look under WinXP
Fixes/File Association Fixes for both. Download and run them to repair the
damage.

Try doing a repair of windows first before doing a reformat. Doing a repair will put in parts of windows that is missing.

Darn, you just reminded me to check out your symbol chart that you said you
added. I meant to do that before, but I just don't get out much! :o)
