Hi! Please help me! :(

When I type something and then realize I need to add more text I place the
cursor in the spot, type the text and it over-writes what I've already
written. This started a few minutes ago when my pinky accidently hit a key
on the right side of my laptop and I used to know the command to fix it but I
can't remember.

You most likely hit the 'Insert' key, press it again to stop the overwriting
of text.

What program?

Try the Insert key, Ctrl/Insert, Shift/Insert.. If this is with Word,
look at the status bar on the bottom of the window. Insert mode should
replaced with over-write when you find the correct combination.

It's not a command, it's a key.

The Insert key is a toggle switch. You are either in Insert mode or Typeover
Mode. You used to be in Insert mode, but accidentally hit the key and are
now in Typeover mode. Press the key again to reverse it. Every time you
press it, it reverses the setting.

Personally, I never want to be in Typeover mode, and I use SharpKeys at
http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/ to disable the key entirely, so it has
no effect if I hit it accidentally. I do the same with the CapsLock key,
another key I never use.
