I hope this isn't a reinstall!

Hello all – in something of a mess here and any help gratefully received!

In tidying up, using a file shredder to do so, I think I have been far too
keen, and deleted a load of key operating files. Problems that I have found
so far:
1 WMP11 gives a message “WM Player cannot play the file. The Player might
not support the file type, or the codec that was used to compress the fileâ€
Fine – I’m happy to delete them all and start again
2 Windows Installer disappeared from my list of installed programmes but
I’ve downloaded it and reinstalled it
3 Some desktop shortcut icons do not now work. Word, for example, under
Properties / Shortcut tab states “this is not a valid shortcutâ€, although all
the files are still there and can be opened via my computer / my documents
route. However, the unknown format icon appears by their name.
4 The PowerPoint icon has defaulted to the generic white and blue icon, but
again all files are still in there.
5 Adobe Reader 7.0 puts up “AR has encountered a problem and needs to
close…†message
6 Worryingly, my Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 wouldn’t
update online and now has disappeared off my desktop and won’t uninstall or
reinstall. When I try to do a clean uninstall, it says “this action is only
valid for products that are currently installed†I feel an expensive helpline
call coming… ! I have the subscription for the online downloads. All
perfectly fine and dandy, but trying to re-install from a download now, I run
the wizard and then get “An interruption prevented the setup programme from
completely installing TMPCC 2007. Please reinstall laterâ€
7 I cannot print at all, not even a test page, simply getting “A printing
error has occurred, some of the document may not print correctlyâ€
8 I have tried a system restore twice now, each time getting the message
“Your system cannot be restored to the point…†I've tried to follow BertK but
cannot seem to open in safe mode...
9 ADAware, and Spyware Blaster run Ok and say I’m clean; Advanced
Uninstaller Pro 2007 says my registry is good, but RegistrySmart today says
it found 379 things wrong - I know they all look for slightly different
things! - including system services. My last virus scan last week on TMPC-C
said nothing found. Launching TM Housecall today simply sends me back to my
own desktop and seems not to run.

I’d really like not to have to install XP !

Many thanks, from a first class dunderhead...

You could try a repair install of XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx.

By the sound of it you don't have a full system backup - pity.

Hello Maincat - thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay, its school
holidays here in UK and I'm under instructions to paint two bedrooms and a
bathroom this week !

In the end, managed to delete and reinstall WMP11 (losing a load of tracks
on the way but who cares !) / fixed the shortcuts from the main application
itself / reinstalled AR7 / got good support from TM about uninstalling PCC
and now sorted (seems I had not fully uninstalled from all the far corners of
the registry) / reinstalled EPSON drivers / it lets me system restore now /
and I even made a slipstreamed XP/SP2 disc !

Backup lesson learnt, the hard way !
