I Have To Ask

Arturo

I have to ask some questions about this forum so I can see if I am wasting my
time.

I use this forum quite a bit and have learned a great deal from it. But, I
also encounter problems with it. Two days ago I posted a question asking how
to link to an SQL view from a Data Access Page. Within minutes I received a
response telling me that Microsoft doesn’t support this anymore so I should
try something else. I responded to that by telling the person that I knew
that but I still needed an answer to my question.

I still do need an answer. Can you use an SQL View as a data source for a
data access page? If so, how do you do it?

1) Today I looked for that post and could not find it. This has happened
before with DAP questions. I post them. I may or may not get an answer. Then
they disappear. So, here are my concerns.

2) If I post questions about Data Access Pages, am I going to be chastised
every time? You don’t know my circumstances. I am involved in training to get
past this phase of development. However, I am in a crunch situation and can
use DAP’s as a temporary fix.

If I do get answers, is there someone that monitors this forum and tries to
discourage DAP’s by deleting these posts?

Thank you for your help.

Hi. There's no problems with posting questions about DAPs here: that's
perfectly appropriate and on-topic.

But, if the vast majority of posters here don't use DAPs, it severely limits
the likelihood of getting a good informed response. I don't use them, so I
can't provide you with much help about them.

So, in the end, although your question is appropriate and welcome, it could
turn out that you learn there's not point asking it here.

I can understand your frustration. I also have problems with this site. The
'notify me of replies' does not work - plus some posts never appear.

Also with a question one sometimes gets a reply of "why would you do that?"
or "don't do that".....they are in fact attempting to be helpful...since DAPs
are discontinued it is particularly good advice as when one upgrades to
Access07 or later - and that will eventually happen - you lose the capability
and thus why invent it now....

Another big point is if Allen Browne doesn't know the answer - one really is
in a bad area because Allen isn't just an MVP - he is like the super ultra
MVP. But there is a specific Data Access Pages area in this forum and you
can perhaps post there again. I also have never used it. If you have an
associate that is managing the web site then I think you will find there are
several different techniques that can be used to publish info from an Access
db to a web page - and will depend upon the web technology being used and
whether or not the web site and Access are co-located on the same LAN.

another fyi - I believe that the commercial online db service
www.DabbleDB.com can import an Access table - - and that might be a solution
to post data on the web. Overall dabble is cool though limited in its
features - but if one just uses it to post a simple set of data that might be
worthwhile.

Arturo,

In addition to the other responses... You could just *Google* Data Access
Pages, you'll likely get what I did, thousands of returns and perhaps your
issue was addressed. (Note, I never used them so sorry can offer no help to
your question.)

I appreciate your reply. I do believe there are people that know the answers
to some of my questions. I'm hoping to get lucky. I have found that you can
do some amazing things with Access. Sometimes, you just need that little
boost. Though the DAP is no longer supported, it is not dead. I own the
product and it can be very helpful to me. Having newer techmology doesn't
mean you have to quit using the old. I know many people that thought COBOL
was dead. When the Y2K event happened, it became very critical and useful to
a lot of people.

So, I don't think we have to kill DAP just because it is not suported by
Microsoft.

Thank you.

I'm also not versed in DAP; but just in terms of the forum mechanics, here are
a couple of suggestions.

First, remember that everyone who answers questions here is a volunteer.
Nobody here works for Microsoft; nobody's paid to answer questions; that's why
it's free, for one thing!

Secondly, the Microsoft webpage is not the only - or even a very good! -
interface to the questions and answers. They're all on a Newsgroup
("microsoft.public.access" in this case) on Usenet; they originate on the
msnews.microsoft.com news server and are (hopefully, not always!) propagated
to thousands of other news servers (aioe is another one that I use). You can
use http://groups.google.com to search for past messages; use advanced search
and specify the microsoft.public.access newsgroup, or
microsoft.public.access.* to search the many related groups. I suspect that
this will let you find earlier posts about DAP.

Ok, just for curiosity, I tried it; far fewer hits than I expected but some,
and it seems the answer is yes. Try

http://groups.google.com/groups/sea...c.access.*&as_usubject=&as_uauthors=&safe=off
