I have no codecs, how do I get some for DVD playback?

I just typed this in RUN; dvdupgrd /detect
It said "No decoders found, w2k upgrade=no, win9x upgrade=no LCID=0409

Now, I read that I need some in order to playback my DVD drive that used to
work. I have no idea where nor how to do it. I have no software with it
that I ever knew of. Someone please help me. :}

Look up "K-Lite" codec pack.

I have downloaded the basic pack, but don't know how to install it--no
directions.
