I have huge number of .txt (text) files . They are bogging down both my
computer and me, so I want to get rid of them. Since I am a 'pack rat' I
want to save them:

1. Go to My Documents;

2. select about 15 text files;

3. right click on one of them;

4. choose 'send to';

5. choose CD-RW Drive (E)

6. insert disc into Drive E; and

6. delete the files if necessary.

Do I have this correct?

Thank you,

Barry Karas

PS I have Windows XP with SP2.

Easier - purchase 4GB USB thumb drive, insert it, find it in "My Computer"
and open it, create a directory called "Text Files" or something on it (that
means something to you) and organize all your text files you want to archive
into that folder(set of folders...) That way you could 'move' them to the
USB thumb drive.

I seriously doubt the text files are 'boggin down' your computer in a
performance manner, however... ;-)

What do you mean by "bogging down"?

They surely aren't hurting your computer unless you've got a small
hard drive and there's no space left.

..txt files do not slow down windows.

With my files, I find it advantageous to firstly "move" the files of choice
to a new folder.
Name it say "20080107 text files backed up from Cdrive"

Then when you have your backup ready , move 'em all
in one shot, and to hence an easily identified folder.

How many is a "huge number"?

How much disk space do they take up?

They are bogging down both my
computer and me,

Text files, or any other kind of files, do not bog down computers.
They have *no* effect on the speed of the computer. They take up some
disk space, but text files are typically small, and it's hard to
imagine that you could have so many of these and that they are large
enough that the amount of disk space they consume is significant.

No. In general you can not treat a writeable CD drive like a giant
diskette. To write to it, you have to invoke CD-writing software,
either what comes with Windows, or better, one of the many better
third-party products available. The exception to this is if you have
packet-writing software installed, such as Drag-to-Disk, DirectCD,
InCD, and DLA (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_writing)

Another choice you might want to consider is writing them to a USB
thumb drive, instead of a CD.

I write A LOT. Since I've been on a computer since 1993 and written many
files (TXT and DOC -- from MS Word -- but mostly TXT) there are many such
files.
