Please please can some one help me?
I have tried all the help online to remove the w32/gaobot.gen virus. Not one
web site has been able to give me the right info to help me get shot of this
worm.
After using my recovery cd that sets xp back to its factory settings 8 times
now - I still have the virus after that, I am so fed up.What I would like to
know is :-
Can I reformat my c drive then use the cd restore to make this worm get off
my laptop?
Will the c drive be needed with its info for the cd to work and restore it
to its factory settings?
Please dont send me to another web site for a scan, as I have tried 5
different scans and none have helped, also their info on this worm doesnt
seem to apply to my situation.
I have mcafee installed and it cant clean it.
I have disabled the auto shut down as this worm seems to want to reboot my
laptop very often. (its not the blaster virus as i did a scan for that and I
have the patch installed)
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Yes You can Reformat The Drive And Your Restore Disk Should Restore It.

If. ...

#1 You Can Boot From The CD Or Have A Boot Disk. That Has CD Rom Drivers.
#2 That This Virus Isn't In The Boot Sec.
( Cause It Will Just Re-Infect. Your Drive. )
#3 Goto Your Manufacturer WWW Site And Check With Them

But You Should Be able To Format Then Use The Restore Disk :)

But Very Surprised That A WWW Site Virus Scan Cant Help You !

Lets Us Know :) What Happens.

You may have forgotten one very important step. Before attempting to remove
a virus, make sure you disable System Restore (Control Panel, System, System
Restore Tab--put a check mark in the top box.)

If you fail to do this, XP will (protect itself). It will maintain a copy of
the virus and restore it the first chance it gets.

1. What is the date of the virus definition file used by McAffee? If
you have the latest, copy the definition to a floppy disk and boot from
the McAffee AV CD.

Ex. I have the SystemWorks 2002 CD that has NAV 2002 and is bootable.
Just go to your laptop's BIOS screen and set the laptop to boot from the
CD, first. THe laptop will then boot from CD and you can run your
anti-virus app from the CD. It will likely ask for a floppy. If you
have one with the most current virus definition, you can deal with the
worm. This includes boot sector types.

Of course, you can always do an FDISK on the C: and that should take
care of it. Of course, you'll lose all data and will have to format and
partition your drive.

Try Norton's Symantec site, they might have a virus removal tool that you
download. If so, follow their instructions, hopefully that might help.

You can download a WormBlaster32 tool from Symantec to get
rid of it....I noticed someone has already told you you
must click System Restore off while you do this.

Thanks to everyone
Finally the virus has gone now. I did a scan and it wasnt cleanable, but
then I rebooted and scanned again and it had gone, (I did the system restore
on /off thing but i had done that before). I dont know how it left my laptop
or what I did that was different to the last 8 times but, its gone..Yippee I
am so happy now. Thanks again to you all :-))

.
I just checked nortons web site for this virus and their
seems to be many variations of it you need the tool for
the EXACT name of the virus also when you use the tool
you need to shut of system restore to delete the files
because it is stored in the as well and will reinfect
your computer look at nortons web site for the tool and
get rid of "Mcrappy"

This link is not for a virus scan but for info on your
virus and a removal tool
