I have a pst file on disk that I cannot access. Apparently, I saved it as a
read only file from an old computer. I have tried to open in it using the
same version of Outlook it was created but get a parameters incorrect or
access denied. I have tried saving it on my computer but it will not allow me
to. Any ideas?

You're halfway there. Now all you have to do is to remove the read-only
attribute from the PST file that you transferred to your computer.

You can do this by r-clicking on the file, selecting Properties, then uncheck
the Read-only attribute.

David,

I have tried that and I receive an error message "Access denied". Any other
suggestions?

How did you place this file on your hard drive and where did you place it?

I have not been able to save it on my harddrive. I saved it to a disc to
transfer it to a new computer. When I try to copy it or save it to my new
computer form the disc or even try to open it from the disc, I receive the
errors mentioned earlier.

Use a file manager, like Windows Explorer, to transfer the file from the CD
media to your harddrive and then remove the Read-only attribute of the file.

This is a very basic function performed by just about any file manager utility.
A tutorial on Windows Explorer would be considered off-topic for this newsgroup.
If you are unfamiliar with its use, I'd suggest that you search and peruse the
Help files of your OS.

| Can you elaborate. I have never used Windows Explorer for that typr of
| function.

The removable disk is just like any other disk. Double-click My Computer,
double-click the removable disk. COntinue in this fashion until you've
browsed to the file. Click it and drag it to, say, your desktop or your My
Documents. Then right-click it, select Properties, and uncheck Read Only.
Click OK.

If what you are saying is the same thing Brian Tillman is in his post. I have
tried all of these things. I am unable to save, copy, cut, paste, uncheck
Read Only, etc. Nothing works. The file either says I do not have permission,
parameters incorrect.

If you saved it on any other media type other than a CD, post back with details.

Otherwise, I'm assuming that it's on a CD, if so, you cannot do anything to it,
that's by design. Using Windows Explorer, simply drag and drop a COPY of it
somewhere to your harddrive. After you successfully do that, then r-click on the
COPY of the file, select Properties, then uncheck the Read-only attribute. This
last step is done on the file that was copied to your harddrive.

If you're doing things differently than outlined above, tell us, step by step,
exactly what you did and what you did it with.

To avoid this kind of difficulty, you'd better transfer your PST file
compressed in a ZIP file; this will preserve all your attributes and
access rights.

Supplemental:

If you're doing everything according to Hoyle and still cannot access the file,
it may be corrupt. If so, got back to your old computer and make another copy of
the file. Be sure that Outlook is closed and not running in the background when
you make the copy, otherwise the copy will be corrupt.

details.
