I give up

I have a win XP Pro machine old Pentium 3- 866. It has been hanging on
startup. This only happens when the machine has been off 4-5 hours or more.
Once it starts you can start it 20 times perfect. One time it said can not
read boot disk or something to that effect. I had a different machine that
went bad an it would say can not read C drive. Any way I figured it was the
controller on the main board so I got a Ultra 133 Controller to put in a PCI
slot and a new cable. Same thing so I say maybe hard disk even it is pretty
new so I get a new one tried to transfer the data with Norton Ghost there is
$70.00 more and do a repair install of Win XP same problem. This thing is a
money pit. I have already wasted about a fourth of what I could have bought
a good bare bones system. Unless some has some advice I am just going to
leave it on until it dies and get a new one.

It just started snowing in Burlington, North Carolina. I am going outside.

Thanks, Sammy Castagna

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web
set to test the told drive.

That should be "old" not "told" drive.

Rock,
I put in a new hard disk and it still would hang.

Test the ram with memtest8+. Also could be a power supply issue or a
problem with the motherboard.
