I get cl&ose in add/remove programs & network configuation is missing NICs

D

David Hardinge

Someone PLEASE help me here. I have seen this on 2 of our
servers TODAY.

In the add/remove programs- the words are all jumbled in
a row at the top. There are no programs listed. On the
CLOSE button in the bottom right it says "cl&ose" and will
not close the box.

In the network configuration- The NICs are not listed.
Drivers are there, was working fine this morning on the
net.

In the Control Pannel- All the icons are in the LEFT box
and the right box is empty.

Service loading errors at startup and tell you to check
Event Logs- Open the logs, see there are errors but can
not view them. If you try to close event reader it tells
you that you must close the open event (which doesn't
display).

The only thing in common on the 2 servers was Office 2k
was installed, and the same IE6 SP1 was installed on both.

I can not afford to rebuild 1 of the servers as there are
too many important things on it.

PLEASE EMAIL me if you have an idea how to fix this !!!
Thank You,

David

We are seeing the exact same symptoms. They go away for
a while if we reboot the server. Did you find a solution
to the problem?

For anyone out there who comes accross this thread, I had exactly the
same problem with a friends Win2000 laptop and it transpired to be the
goabot virus. Emergency virus scans in DOS failed to pick it up. I
identified it manually when I spotted a process called service5.exe
running.

Please see this URL for more details of how to identify it as it can
use several different names for the process.

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.gaobot.af.html

Once I deleted the references to service5.exe from the registry,
deleted the file from c:\winnt\system32 and rebooted, the laptop was
fine and everything returned to normal.
