Try ruuning the System File Checker.

Open a Command Prompt.

Type

sfc /?

for syntax and usage notes.

I'd suggest

sfc /scanonce

and then reboot.

Have your XP CD-ROM to hand as your pc may need it to restore any corrupt
files.

How do you do this with a HP supplied XP-disk? Not everyone has the XP disk
from the store. :-(

I'd guess that you just run SFC and it'll either find the files it needs
from the XP file cache on your hard drive or it'll ask for the HP CD-ROM.

Try it - if you can't locate a file to restore then post again with more
detail.

** Does the CD the PC companies supply work like a MS XP CD from the store
now? I know the two (W98) that came with our old HP PC didn't.
