I don't know if I have spy or ad ware or a highjacker? I have Windows XP/SP2
with cable connection, IE. All is well except when the PC sets turned on and
idle with the desktop and screen saver displayed, when you move the mouse to
switch it on, a web page advertistment appears (an Ad for a spyware remover).
Even before I click on my home page IP. If you click this page off, it
doesn't even appear on the history. Where is this comming into my computer
from and how might I get rid of this, I regularly use Spybot, Adaware,
Boozka, beta 1, plus others to clean up the spyware and such. Any ideas?
Thanks.

With Spybot, have you immunized your system? You should, if you haven't.

Also, with Spybot and Ad-aware, have you downloaded and installed their
updates?

Have you run a full virus scan with current virus definitions?

Have you checked Task Manager to see what suspicious apps and processes
might be running?

Have you checked your startup folders and appropriate Registry keys to
see what is starting up at bootup?

Have you checked msconfig?

Are you using a firewall (not Microsoft's) and router?

I am testing some of your info to see if it does the trick, meanwhile can you
advise why you have a bias to MS firewall? What would you use? Also do you
have an opinion about MS Spyware beta 1? Thanks

The MS firewall only stops traffic going in, not out. It's half ass, IOW.
Notice that MS' Spyware is *beta*. Many people have reported that it has
removed stuff it shouldn't, rendering the computer useless. Use at your own
risk. I mean it took them how long to develop a stable OS? And that's their
specialty. AV and AScumware is not.

Did you run the anti scumware apps in Safe Mode? You should.

WinXP's built-in firewall is merely _adequate_ (that's far short of
"really very good") at stopping incoming attacks, and hiding your ports
from probes. What WinXP SP2's firewall does not do, is protect you from
any Trojans or spyware that you (or someone else using your computer)
might download and install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going
traffic at all, other than to check for IP-spoofing, much less block (or
at even ask you about) the bad or the questionable out-going signals. It
assumes that any application you have on your hard drive is there
because you want it there, and therefore has your "permission" to access
the Internet. Further, because the Windows Firewall is a "stateful"
firewall, it will also assume that any incoming traffic that's a direct
response to a Trojan's or spyware's out-going signal is also authorized.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even the commercially
available Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall is superior by far,
although it does take a heavier toll of system performance then do
ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

Also do you
have an opinion about MS Spyware beta 1? Thanks

It looks promising, but it's too early to tell if it'll be a real
solution. To date, both Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D still find things
(mostly tracking cookies) that Microsoft's offering ignores.
