I deleted 22 gigs of photographs!!!

F

FLKULCHAR

I did a stupid thing; I deleted 22 gigs of photos from my hard drive. When I
was informed that my Recycle Bin was filled up, I clicked o.k.....and lost
all my photos.

I was erroneously under the assumption that I was deleting "copies".

IS THERE A WAY TO RECOVER THIS LOST DATA?

Thanks,

FLKulchar

Yes. Stop using the hard drive. Any write operations attempted
on the drive at this point, could be *really* erasing the data.
So if the OS makes a System Restore point, the write operations
on C: from that, could be overwriting part of your 22GB of photos
which were stored on C:.

Slave the drive to another computer, and use something like Recuva
or any of the other programs which understand how to find files
recently erased. Files aren't really erased in Windows, they're
marked for reuse. So they don't get erased until something
overwrites them. If you stop writing on that hard drive,
you increase the chances of getting all the files back.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undeletion

"Limitations

Undeletion is not fail-safe. In general, the sooner undeletion
is attempted, the more likely it will be successful. Fragmentation
of the deleted file may also reduce the probability of recovery,
depending on the type of file system (see below). A fragmented
file is scattered across different parts of the disk, instead
of being in a contiguous area."

You may want to try more than one of those undeletion programs, to
improve the odds of getting the files back. Just remember, *no* writing
on the disk you're recovering the files from. Only reading from that
disk. You'll need a spare disk, with sufficient space to hold 22GB
of files, from each of the data recovery programs you try. With multiple
attempts to recovery the files, you may get enough candidates to get
(most) of your data back.

Good luck,
Paul

Yes there are several file recovery programs available, some free some
are not. A simple search using Google will get you a good list to start
with...

One word of caution... your files have not actually been deleted.
Instead the space they occupied on the hard drive has been marked as
free. So the more you use your PC the more likely they'll be written
over and reducing your ability to recover all of your lost files.

Now is the time to reconsider your backup strategy for your important
user files.....

I answered this moments ago in another thread. Please don't repeat the
same question.

I don't understand why people don't make backups. Your hard drive could
fail at any time. People never think that they could lose their files. Oh
well.

The question is not IF the hard drive is going to fail but WHEN the hd is
going to fail.

BTW there is a very nice backup solution with Windows7 but that's another
topic.

Nope, you seriously screwed up. Did you have a backup?

GOOD now you can have 22 gigs of spam messages to fill that space.

Let us know how you're getting on.
